Rick And Morty – Season 3 Episode 3 REVIEW

‘Pickle Rick’

Mild Spoilers

Possibly the simplest concept for the show, ‘Pickle Rick’ is the greatest episode of Season Three so far. Before I saw this, I did wonder, why the hell would Rick Sanchez make himself into a food substance? The reason is actually integral to the story and goes to show that minimal spectacle can produce maximum entertainment. The first five minutes alone focuses on our main character as he adapts to his predicament as a vegetable before ending up in a…well, you get the idea!

What about The Smith family? This week we don’t get to see Jerry, but we do have Morty, Summer and Beth going to therapy to talk about the problems that the kids are having. This divorce is getting more life than I could have imagined, but at least there is no poop being eaten (a speciality of Dr. Wong apparently).

The main theme for this instalment comes from the title, Rick goes on an unbelievable adventure where he fights rats in a sewer and takes on a shady organisation. There are plenty of moments which are reminiscent of Die Hard, Predator and other 80’s action films, providing some humorous sequences and imaginative deaths.

The best moments come from Justin Roiland as he voices our favourite eccentric scientist when he takes on the vermin under the streets, the criminals led by a Hans Gruber-type and Danny Trejo as the dangerous Jaguar. I really hope Jaguar will appear again in the future, he could be a great ally. Also, the final moments when Sanchez and The Smiths are all brought together is a nice moment, where we do see Sarah Chalke really showing some emotion as Beth is desperate for her family unit to be closer.

We are only 3 episodes in, but Season Three could be the best by far if we continue on this trajectory. We do get a few nods to the earlier episodes again and the jokes do come out thick and fast throughout its runtime. The show does make use of some great set pieces and more quaint scenes which shows Rick and Morty is not afraid to evolve.

Next week, we get Vindicators 3: The Return Of Worldender (I have a feeling this will be made to look like a third part of a trilogy). Let’s keep this journey going!

Final Rating: 9.5/10
