Rick and Morty – Season 3 Episode 1 review

“The Rickshank Redemption”

Well, I got a few emails saying about why wasn’t Rick and Morty on my list of shows to see in 2017. To be honest, there was not even an agreed upon date for its release, but I was not expecting this. April Fools Day and we get the premiere episode of Season Three. There was a little teaser video online showing Rick as he was held in intergalactic prison, but then we got the whole first episode. All I can say is, it’s about damn time!

Picking up where Season Two left off, Rick finds himself being probed by the intergalactic prison as they look to extract information from him. They want to learn about how Rick created his portal gun, so Rick and one of the operatives (voiced by Nathan Fillion, who is great in this episode) explore Rick’s memories and finds a younger Rick with his wife Diane and daughter Beth. Meanwhile, with earth being governed now by the federation, the Smith family get used to life without Rick since he turned himself in. Summer wants to save Rick, but Morty is still angry with Rick and their parents are in different places. Jerry actually keeps getting promoted in his new job and is happy with how the world is, but that feeling isn’t clearly shared.

With Rick attempting to get himself out of prison, his grandkids are then on their own mission to rescue Rick once they grab one of his portal guns. We also get many call backs to many of the big moments of Season One and Two (not to give too much away, but the “Rick Potion #9” episode is given a good call back). The action in the episode is fantastic, and the joke about a McDonalds sauce shouldn’t be so damn funny, but it really was. Then we get that ending that reminds me so much of the ending of the first episode, almost a trope now for the show. Then we get that post-credit scene and…WHAT THE F**K!? Rick and Morty can go to some weird and wonderful places, but I did not expect that! This season is going to be intense!

Ok, I woke up and watched Rick and Morty at 4am here in the UK! But, it was worth it. I love this show and it never ceases to amaze me. We got another 13 episodes coming which has been promised for this summer. Rick and Morty is finally back, it has been 18 months since the last episode was aired and it was worth the wait. I think this episode avoided putting in too many jokes, but it was still funny and exciting. As mentioned, Nathan Fillion makes a great cameo and Justin Roiland is great as usual voicing multiple Rick’s and Morty’s in the episode. But the best performance is Spencer Grammer as Summer was truly the star of this episode and has shown her development over the series to become a clever young woman.

Bring on the rest of season three!

Final rating: 8.5/10

The episode may still be available for a short while before it comes to TV later this year, so do watch it if you can!
